ECPs have different levels of education and training, ranging from simple post-secondary training to doctoral level education. Another year of residency is also needed. Their education involves intensive refractive knowledge and medical training. Entering the field is very competitive.

Optometrists have a specialty in vision correction and optics. In the US, these practitioners also have training that allows them to conduct minimally invasive surgical procedures. Such procedures include removal of foreign bodies from eyes and meibomian gland expression. They are also qualified to diagnose, treat, and prevent a huge number of vision-related conditions.

Management and diagnosis of issues related to coordination and movement of eyes is done by orthoptists. In addition, they manage problems related to amblyopia, accommodation and convergence, strabismus, misaligned visual axis, and binocular vision. Their work may extend to include providing help to ophthalmologists during operation or teaching students taking orthoptic classes. They may also participate in researches done by medical institutions including hospitals.
