Coping With Seasonal Affective Disorder Effectively

By Daniel Cole

Seasonal affective disorder is another type of depression, which usually occurs during the winter period that brings on various behavioral changes a person's life. During spring and summer, they will improve. However, in the winter it can be extremely difficult and coping with seasonal affective disorder is never easy for the individual.

Many people think that this disorder is not as severe as other types of depression because it only hits you once every season. However, you also have to remember that there is a great deal of anxiety as the winter approaches. During the winter, you will feel as if you are unable to move out of bed. You will feel sad, anxious, possible, irritable and angry because of these feelings that you are going through.

Many family members don't understand what you are going through. People often don't understand what is causing this, and friends can even turn the disorder into a joke. However, this is very real and needs to be taken seriously. It is not simply the fact that you are feeling a little blue because you are cold or you dislike the rain and the grey clouds.

It can also take some time to diagnose, because psychologists have to find out what it may relate to. Symptoms may relate to other factors in your life. Symptoms are all closely related so they have to make sure that this is the correct diagnosis. They may find that the reason for this is that there is a lack of serotonin at this time or you are sleeping less.

There is also specialized types of therapy available, such as cognitive behavioral therapy as well as interpersonal therapy. Some clients will be referred to a therapist who will work with other clients in groups. This is a great way of connecting with other patients in groups. You will get to share what you are going through, and in doing so you will connect with others.

There are other types of therapists who can help someone to deal with their confidence, self esteem as well as their medication, which is often necessary. It obviously depends on the severity of the disorder as well. Child psychologists may be helpful for the teenager who is suffering from this. Parents need to watch out for kids who display changes in their behavior.

It is important to have a plan of action every day. Of course, this is not something that is easy to suddenly jump into, and can involve baby steps. It may involve standing outside on the balcony or in the garden and absorbing some of the sunshine. This will help you get out of bed and will lift your spirits. It is recommended that you have a good breakfast before jumping onto the next task.

Getting involved in an exercise program will help you raise your serotonin levels. It doesn't mean that you have to spend hours in the gym. Sometimes, you have to start off with baby steps. It may mean going outside and going for a gentle stroll around the block or taking the dog for a walk. You may benefit from running on the treadmill for a few minutes.
