Origins Of Navicular Disease In Horses

By Ryan Hall

The condition has been known to be contributed by human activities. The domesticated mounts are more likely to be affected compared to wild animals. As the name suggests, the disorder affects the navicular bone. Various factors can contribute to navicular disease in horses, as discussed in the article. Cartilage infection is one of the leading causes of a disorder when the cartilage is compressed. It degenerates hence reduces its ability to absorb shock.

The warmbloods and the thoroughbreds are known to be the most affected breed. Other factors, such as broken hoof and conformational abnormalities, are the leading causes of illness. The disease affects the front feet. However, one leg will be more affected than the other. This is seen in the horse, placing the affected leg on top of the leg that is not infected.

The inflammation can prevent blood flow to and from the area. Since the vessels are used for supplying minerals, the part becomes weak, and pressure might start building up in this area. Other factors that can lead to the development of a disorder include conformation. These are defects that promote concussion. They include small feet, long toes, significant downhill build, and low heel.

An animal is either borne with these defects or acquires it due to care practices. For example, if they are trimming or once shoeing is not done correctly. When the hoofs are cut, they should not be reduced excessively as it results it makes them small hence cannot absorb pressure evenly. This result in the force being transferred to the navicular. Shoeing helps the horses in the prevention of this complaint. However, once it is not done correctly, it can lead to more harm than good.

Experts should do these practices as it can increase the chances of eliminating the pressure. The vet will also recommend the exercises that your stallion would be taken through. Additionally, an individual must ensure they watch on the diet of their horses. The signs are not a sure way of diagnosing the condition. Thus the vet would carry out other tests.

According to research, the most affected horses are those that are kept in small stalls, racehorses and the ones used for exhibition. This has been associated with decreased bold flow due to reduced motion. Those animals that have high body weight compared to the foot weight often acquire the condition as they exert pressure on navicular. The disorder can be treated easily while in its early stages.

A person can diagnose his or her horse by observing on the signs. However, proper diagnosis can be made by the vets. The specialized will combine a variety of factors when examining the condition, they can combine history, symptoms, and when the state is at its worst radiography to observe the level of damage. History will help the specialist determine the behavior of a horse.

Surgery is therefore performed as a last resort. The cost of treating this condition is high as it involves the combination of a variety of factors. Thus an individual should carry out preventive measures to ensure that the animal does not develop these complications. A person would ensure that regular checkups must be performed as it enables the veterinarian to detect the illness early. Also, other routine maintenance ought to be done by highly qualified individuals.
