Pros And Cons Of Ozone Sanitizing Of Wastewater

By Matthew Thompson

Clean water is fundamental to the health of human beings and should be readily available at any time. Rivers and wells are natural sources of partly clean water, but states have adopted cleaning of sewage water for consumption. The waste water goes through different sanitizing processes before it is declared fit for human use. Chlorine has been used for ages as a cleaning agent, and is now becoming a sluggish process which has forced water distributing plants to adopt ozone sanitizing to meet the water demand in their areas.

When using the ozone gas as a cleaning agent, there are less byproduct as compared to chlorination process. Water is put at risk by chemical byproducts that are produced during the treatment. Like the ultraviolet purification method, it does not leave unpleasant chemical tastes in the water. The clean water can be consumed without the smell that is experienced in chlorine treated water.

Use of ozone as a water treatment has no residual deposits that affect the surrounding environment. It also diffuses in a short time when released in water giving no chances of any damage to the air. Its efficiency in the treatment process has brought energy saving costs down that are accumulated when steaming water to make it safe for drinking.

These sanitizing agents have no negative effect on the environment. When emitted, it turns into oxygen within minutes, and this ensures that no plants and animals are affected by it. The gas is also licensed for use in most regions, making it more suitable for water treatment.

The main purpose of water treatment is to kill all possible germs in water. Use of untreated water causes diarrhea, flue, typhoid and other diseases that are an economic disadvantage to most families. Therefore, water treatment companies should embrace the advantage of using ozone sanitization method to ensure it distributes clean water.

Low dose amounts of these water treatment method cannot eradicate some germs in the water especially germs that usually form cysts. This demands input of high doses during the process and can be difficult and expensive for most of its users. Moreover, this gas breaks down rapidly, and it decays faster in high temperatures. It is considerably expensive to use it in treating wastewater that has high levels of organic compounds and suspended solids.

The gas has a high reaction rate when used in the cleaning process, and this makes it one of the great sanitizers. The same strength has its accompanying disadvantages when used on wastewater container linings that are made with metals. It is recommended that you use stainless steel containers which are resistant to corrosion. This makes the plant construction to become expensive since you have to look for suitable containers.

The gas reacts badly when it comes into human contact. When installing it in a pool or the treatment tank, you should wear protective gloves and use gas masks to prevent you from inhaling it. These gadgets are expensive, and the whole process would cost more when treating an affected person who has inhaled it.
