Long Island Mosquito Control: What Are DEET Repellents?

By David Kellan

Considering the prevalence of mosquitoes during the warmer months of the year, it's important to know how to keep them away. One of the best methods, according to mosquito control Long Island specialists, is the utilization of DEET repellents. To say that these products matter would be an understatement, but the reasons behind this may not be clear. Here are just a few things that you should know about said repellents so that you may be more inclined to use them in the future.

DEET repellents, in simplest terms, are solutions that are used to keep a number of pests away from the property it's applied. While this term is often associated with mosquitoes, companies along the lines of Alternative Earthcare will tell you that it can be applied to ticks and fleas, too. These repellents are made with numerous ingredients, but DEET is the most prevalent. As Long Island mosquito control specialists will tell you, its role is undeniable.

One of the reasons why DEET, the chemical compound used in the aforementioned repellents, is noteworthy is the various forms it can take on. It can be used for lotions and sprays, just to name a few, and it can cover the skin with ease. Instead of killing mosquitoes, however, DEET is meant to be a shield of sorts so that insects cannot detect skin that they can bite. This reduces the risk of mosquito bites in particular, making it one of the most protective chemicals.

If you're open to a history lesson, DEET was developed back in 1944, before being used by the U.S. Army only a couple of years later. Its main purpose, at this time, was as a pesticide. It could be used to treat areas where insects were prevalent, keeping them away so that civilians would be able to traverse said areas safely. DEET proved useful in this situation, and it's clear that its presence has only grown from an insect prevention standpoint.

As you can see, there are many things to know about DEET repellent, from its purposes to how it developed. It went from being something of a military tool to a common solution that anyone can purchase. During the warmer months especially, it's important to apply this repellent so that you can keep mosquitoes and other pests at bay. It's entirely safe, so don't be shy about using it.
