The American bulldogs, 14-month-old Brutus and 8-month-old Athena,
owned by the Werner family, got into their neighbor's backyard Saturday.
The wife of the Bethany police chief claims the dogs jumped on her, scratched and bit her.
The incident brought the families to court.
The police chief’s wife believes the dogs are dangerous and need to be euthanized.
The Werners say their dogs are just puppies and while they did jump on and bruise her, they would never bite anyone.
“[Brutus]
was wrong in jumping on her, I don’t disagree with that. That can be
corrected with training. But there’s not a good justification for
putting him down,” Cole Werner said.
The police chief's wife
admitted in court that the dogs have gotten into her yard several times,
but they’ve never hurt her before.
Ultimately, the judge ruled that the dogs are banned from the city of Bethany.
The police chief and his wife declined to comment.
The
judge says every person has the right to live peacefully and without
fear in their home, and if the owners ever bring the dogs back to
Bethany, they will be fined and found in contempt of court.
