Matthew Todd Miller and Kenneth Bae, the last two American prisoners in North Korea, arrived in Washington on Saturday night after the intervention surprise executive officer of American intelligence.
Kenneth Bae and Matthew Todd Miller arrived Saturday in the United States, respectively, after two and seven months in prison years in North Korea and sentenced to long terms of hard labor. US President Barack Obama hailed "a wonderful day" after the announcement of their release. Is the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), James Clapper in person, who picked the two men, who landed at 21 pm local on Lewis-McChord military base in Washington state (northwest ).
"We are of course grateful that they can return safely," said Barack Obama without thanking specifically North Korea, nemesis of the United States, partly because of its nuclear program. The two countries do not have diplomatic relations, but still have Sweden and exchange via a communication channel, well known diplomats at the United Nations in New York.
Three releases in two weeks
Their relatives were present on arrival. Sister of Kenneth Bae, Terri Chung, in a statement thanked "God (...) and the Government of the United States" for the release of his brother. She also expressed his "gratitude to North Korea."
James Clapper has visited North Korea and urged, "on behalf of the United States, discussions with the People's Republic of North Korea for the release of the two American citizens," said the State Department to say when the secret mission had begun. According to a senior US official, he went to North Korea as the "personal envoy" of the US president.
Both releases come two weeks after the surprise of another American, Jeffrey Fowle. There are officially more Americans and prisoners in North Korea.
Kenneth Bae, a native American in South Korea 46 years old and in poor health, was jailed in November 2012 and sentenced to 15 years hard labor in April 2013. He was accused of being an evangelical Christian activist seeking to overthrow the north Korean government. Matthew Todd Miller, 24, had his side been sentenced to six years hard labor by the Supreme Court of North Korea after his arrest in April. He had torn his visa and applied for asylum with the communist regime.
"The United States has long demanded the North Korean authorities to release these people for humanitarian reasons," said the spokesman of American diplomacy, Jennifer Psaki. Washington accused Pyongyang of using these prisoners as political hostages.
As for the release of Jeffrey Fowle, the United States said they had conceded nothing to the release of the two men.
